AI and Your Nanny CV: A Helpful Tool or a Hiring Risk?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become part of everyday life. From drafting emails to planning holidays, it’s helping people complete tasks more quickly than ever before. It’s no surprise that job seekers are now turning to AI to help write their CVs too.

For nannies and childcare professionals, however, the question isn’t simply whether AI can write a CV. It’s whether it can write one that truly represents your experience, personality and professionalism.

As someone who specialises in writing CVs for childcare professionals, I’ve seen both the benefits and the downsides of AI-generated CVs. AI can be an incredibly useful tool. Used incorrectly, however, it can result in a CV that sounds polished but generic, or one that simply doesn’t reflect your experience accurately.

As AI becomes more widely used, I’m noticing more nanny CVs using the same phrases, sentence structures and buzzwords. Parents and agencies may read dozens, or even hundreds, of applications for a role. A CV that sounds like everyone else’s is unlikely to be memorable.

Why so many people are using AI

Writing about yourself can be difficult. Many experienced nannies know they’re good at their job but struggle to explain their skills on paper or just don’t know where to begin.

This is where AI can be incredibly helpful.

It can help you:

  • overcome writer’s block to get started on your CV
  • improve spelling and grammar
  • reword awkward sentences
  • make information clearer and more concise
  • suggest different ways to describe your responsibilities than you may think of yourself
  • help tailor a CV towards a particular role

These are all positive uses of AI, and there’s no reason to avoid using it as part of the writing process. Like any tool, though, the results depend entirely on how you use it.

AI is only as good as the information you provide

Many people assume AI will produce an excellent CV after a simple prompt such as “Write me a nanny CV.”

In reality, the quality of the output depends almost entirely on the quality of the information you provide. Creating detailed prompts that include your experience, achievements, qualifications, responsibilities and the specific role you’re applying for takes time and careful thought. Even then, AI can only work with the information you’ve remembered to include. It won’t recognise important achievements you’ve overlooked or ask follow-up questions to uncover experiences that could strengthen your application.

By the time you’ve gathered all of that information, refined the prompts and edited the results, you may have spent several hours and still not know whether your CV is presenting you in the strongest possible way.

This is where working with a specialist can make a real difference. Rather than relying solely on the information you initially provide, an experienced CV writer will ask questions, identify strengths you may have overlooked and ensure your experience is presented in the most effective way for parents and agencies.

If your career history is already well organised and you know exactly what employers are looking for, AI can help you present it more clearly. However, most people don’t seek professional CV help because they can’t write. They seek it because they’re unsure what to include, what to leave out and how to present themselves in the strongest possible way.

AI can’t ask follow-up questions

One of the biggest advantages of working with a professional CV writer is the conversation behind the finished document.

During a consultation, I might ask:

  • Did you introduce weaning?
  • Did you travel internationally with the family?
  • Were you responsible for nursery applications?
  • Did you support additional needs?
  • Did you manage household staff?

These are details many candidates don’t think are worth mentioning, yet they’re often exactly what sets one CV apart from another.

AI won’t ask you those questions. If you don’t include the information in your prompt, it simply doesn’t know it exists. Those personal conversations often uncover valuable experience that would otherwise never make it onto a CV, helping to create a much stronger and more individual application.

The problem with generic CVs

One of the easiest ways to spot an AI-written CV is that it could belong to almost anyone. AI predicts what a good CV should sound like based on patterns in the information it has been trained on. As a result, it often produces content that is well written but generic, rather than something that genuinely reflects your experience and personality.

Personal statements often include phrases such as:

“Dedicated and compassionate childcare professional with a passion for supporting children’s development…”

There’s nothing technically wrong with this sentence. The problem is that hundreds of other applicants may have exactly the same wording. Parents and agencies aren’t looking for generic childcare professionals. They’re looking for someone whose experience, approach and personality make them the right fit for their family.

A stronger CV reflects your individual experience, the ages you’ve cared for, your specialisms, the environments you’ve worked in and the unique value you bring to a family.

Accuracy matters

AI is designed to generate fluent, natural-sounding text. However, that doesn’t always mean the information it produces is accurate. I’ve seen examples where responsibilities have been exaggerated, qualifications have been described inaccurately or childcare terminology has been used incorrectly. While these mistakes are usually unintentional, they can create problems during interviews if you’re asked to expand on something that wasn’t entirely accurate.

Your CV should always be an honest reflection of your experience. AI should never invent achievements or responsibilities simply because they sound impressive.

Your personality still matters

Unlike many professions, families aren’t just recruiting skills and qualifications. They’re inviting someone into their home and trusting them with the care of their children. Your CV is often the first glimpse they get of who you are. If every sentence sounds overly formal, robotic or full of corporate jargon, it becomes much harder for your personality to come through.

The most successful nanny CVs sound professional yet warm, approachable and genuine. That’s something AI often struggles to achieve without careful editing.

AI doesn’t understand the childcare industry

One of the biggest limitations of AI is its lack of industry-specific knowledge. A nanny CV is very different from many other professions and should be tailored to reflect the expectations of parents and agencies.

For example, it won’t automatically know:

  • which childcare qualifications should be highlighted first
  • how agencies typically scan a nanny CV
  • how to present multiple short-term contracts
  • how to explain career breaks positively
  • which responsibilities parents actually value
  • when to focus on achievements instead of daily duties

These are the details that can make the difference between securing an interview and being overlooked. More importantly, AI doesn’t know which parts of your experience are likely to matter most to a particular family or agency.

Understanding the expectations of the childcare sector still requires a human experience and judgement.

Using AI responsibly

Rather than asking AI to write an entire CV from scratch, think of it as a helpful assistant.

You might use it to:

  • improve the flow of a paragraph
  • simplify overly long sentences
  • check spelling and grammar
  • generate ideas when you’re struggling
  • adapt your CV for different roles

But every suggestion should be reviewed carefully.

Ask yourself:

  • Is this accurate?
  • Does this sound like me?
  • Would I feel confident discussing this in an interview?
  • Does it genuinely reflect my experience?

If the answer is no, rewrite it.

So, Should You Use AI to Write Your CV?

Whether you choose to write your CV yourself, use AI to support the process or work with a professional, the goal is the same: to create a CV that is accurate, authentic and reflects the value you can bring to a family.

AI can certainly help you get started, but it can’t replace industry knowledge, experience or the conversations that uncover what truly makes you stand out. After all, your CV isn’t just another document. It’s often the first impression you’ll make on the family or agency that could offer your next role.
