Understanding DBS Checks

Understanding DBS Checks for Nannies in the UK

At the National Nanny Association, we prioritise the safety and well-being of children. When hiring a nanny, many families seek peace of mind, which is why an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is recommended. While it is not a legal requirement for nannies in the UK to have a DBS check, we believe it is essential to safeguard children and add a layer of security for both the family and the caregiver.

In this guide, we’ll explore the three levels of DBS checks, explaining what each entails and advising which check is most suitable for a nanny.

What is a DBS Check?

A DBS check is a background check conducted by the UK government to reveal any criminal history. It helps employers make safer recruitment decisions, particularly for roles involving vulnerable groups, such as children.

The 3 Levels of DBS Checks

There are three main types of DBS checks, each offering different levels of information:

A DBS check is a background check conducted by the UK government to reveal any criminal history. It helps employers make safer recruitment decisions, particularly for roles involving vulnerable groups, such as children.

Basic DBS Check

A Basic DBS check is the simplest level of check, revealing unspent convictions or conditional cautions. This type of check is typically used for positions not involving direct contact with vulnerable groups.

  • Who is it for? Roles not necessarily involving vulnerable individuals, such as general employment checks.
  • Information included: Unspent convictions only.

Standard DBS Check

A Standard DBS check provides details on both spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands, and final warnings. It is often requested for positions of trust, but it does not specifically include checks against barred lists for working with vulnerable groups.

  • Who is it for? Positions of trust but not necessarily involving vulnerable groups.
  • Information included: Spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands, and final warnings.

Enhanced DBS Check

An Enhanced DBS check is the most comprehensive type of check. It includes all the information from a Standard DBS check but also searches for any additional information held by local police forces that may be relevant to the role.

For roles involving children or vulnerable adults, an additional Children’s Barred List Check or Adults’ Barred List Check can be added, ensuring the applicant is not prohibited from working with these groups.

  • Who is it for? Roles involving regular contact with children or vulnerable adults, such as teachers, healthcare workers, and nannies.
  • Information included: Spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands, final warnings, additional relevant police information, and barred list checks (if applicable).

Which DBS Check Should a Nanny Have?

For nannies, an Enhanced DBS check with a Children’s Barred List check is recommended, though not legally required. This provides families with assurance that the nanny is not barred from working with children and does not have a history that could pose a risk to their safety.

The Enhanced DBS check is particularly important for live-in nannies or those who work closely with children, as it offers the most detailed safeguarding information. Having this check demonstrates professionalism and commitment to the safety of the children in your care.

Final Thoughts

While DBS checks are not a legal requirement for nannies in the UK, they are strongly recommended for the safety and reassurance of families.

An Enhanced DBS check with a Children’s Barred List check is ideal for nannies, showcasing a commitment to child safeguarding and professionalism in childcare.
